Overview: How to Create a Popup
Creating a Popup is a relatively stress free process if you have a plan of what you wish it to look like and function as.
This article will take you through setting up your first Popup, with a focus on ensuring your targeting and triggers are set up correctly.
Please be aware that you must have a GatorLeads account with a tracked website in order to use Popup as both products are interconnected.
This is because GatorLeads tracking allows you to see individuals and companies who have engaged with your popup, clicked links from your popup, general views (unique and unknown), hits and clicks, as well as click through rate (CTR).
This information will not appear in GatorLeads however.
1. Select 'Create Popup' to begin the creation process.
2. Select the PopUp "Type"; including Promo, Form, Info or Custom.
2. This window will appear. enter the name of your popup and a brief description. Once complete, select 'Create'.
Please Note: You will only have the ability to create popups if you have the Popup role in GatorLeads, which is decided by an Admin user. This is purely for safety as otherwise anyone in your organisation could put a popup on your website.
You are now in the contents tab.
1. Firstly enter a title for your Popup. This is the biggest text and should capture the attention of the visitor.
2. Add in any text which further explains your content. This can have basic formatting applied, with more advanced formatting to occur later in the creation process.
3. This text is what will display on your button e.g. Learn more!
4. Enter in your chosen URL that the button will direct the viewer to.
5. Check the link using this button; the system will briefly check the legitimacy of the URL provided. You will get a success or failure indication once clicked.
6. If you want the redirect to open a new window, tick this box. If you leave this unticked then the redirect will happen in the current open tab.
We recommend to save regularly, to avoid losing your progress. Use the right hand side of the editing screen as shown above to see the changes as you make them.
This is where you set the UTM fields for the target URL. So when they click on the button and go to the target page, the URL will contain these UTM values. This is so you can track a visitors journey.
A popup will pass through existing UTM values from the referring URL unless overidden by inserting new ones above.
Multiple websites on GatorLeads? No problem! Popup supports any websites you have in Leads which contain the tracking code. You can even create a popup that crosses websites!
Please Note: Your Target URL and any page/website URL's used for your Popup MUST contain the GatorLeads tracking code. Popup is intrinsically connected to GatorLeads and as such cannot be used without having a GatorLeads instance.
The Display settings are where you can edit the design of your Popup.
1. Here you can change the pop-up from a 'Window' to a 'Bar'.
2. You can then alter the position of the pop-up for when it appears on your target page.
3. Setting your Popup to be "non-intrusive" on mobiles means that the position it displays in will be changed so as to not block crucial page content.
4. For your pop-up to grab the attention of visitors, you can choose from a variety of entry and exit animations.
Now you can choose to add an image to your popup, set the position, and choose your styling options.
If you choose to use the image colour, then the popup sets it's colouring to that of the image chosen. This can be overridden by changing the individual colours in the 'Theme' section.
Brand Colour is a great tool for automatically putting colour into the popup. It changes the colour palette to complimenting colours, those that stand out without being an eye sore.
As seen above, you have more advanced customisation options for colouring and customisation.
You are able to:
- Change font style
- Select an image to add to your popup
- Use image colouring to format the whole popup theme
- Position the image
- Set the title colour
- Set the button colour
- Set a brand colour which will update all colours based on this
- Set a background colour.
This is where you need to set up how you want your pop-up to appear on the target page .i.e. what conditions are set.
1. Set the Start Conditions. This can be set for: 'At Once' (ideal for product information or release information for a homepage), 'When leaving site' (useful for messages such as "Wait! You haven't signed up to..."), '% of Page' (best for highlighting objects on the page), and 'After period of time'.
2. The Active Period refers to the duration of time that the Popup will be active on your site for. The Popup will not work on either side of these From and To dates, so this is the first thing to check if for some reason your Popup is not showing on your site.
3. You are able to dictate individual days of the week for the Popup to show/not show. For example, if the Popup is advertising a Podcast available on a Friday, you might want the Popup to be visible in the weekdays leading up to it, but not the weekend.
4. Set the Frequency of the Popup appearing here. Your options are every time the visitor lands on the target page, or alternatively you can set time restrictions such as once a day.
5. You also must set the Stop Conditions. This can be done for 'Never', 'On Action Complete' (which is defined in the start conditions), and on 'Number of Views'.
6. Now you need to set the page/s you wish your popup to display on. This is done by selecting your associated site from the dropdown. Once selected you need to decide if you want it to 'Show On' tor 'Don't Show' on a page. You can add multiple target pages, allowing you to use both 'Show On' and 'Don't Show'. If you want it to sit on specific pages, the query string after your domain is what you enter into the Page URL box, as shown in the example below.
7. You have the ability to target specific individuals who meet certain conditions, or you can choose to target all visitors to the specified target page. If you select 'The following conditions' the page will expand to show advanced options.
8. This section is all about settings the conditions for your specified targeting. Here you can choose to include or exclude returning visitors i.e. those who have already visited your target page before.
9. Here you can determine the number of views of the target page a visitor has to make in order for the popup to appear to them. You do not have to enable this feature, it is entirely optional.
10. You have the option to choose web browser types to exclude or include. So if a visitor uses FireFox, and this is an excluded browser, they will not see the popup.
11. You can also exclude or include certain operating systems. This is ideal for tailoring your popup to different display types, especially if your product varies depending on operating system.
12. Whilst we optimise your popups for different devices such as mobiles, you do have the option to prevent the popup from being displayed on mobile or specifying another device e.g. an iPad.
13. The option to add referrer URL's creates an opportunity for you to set a condition on a certain navigation path. For example, you may have your target URL as a specific product page, in which you only want the popup to appear for those who have navigated to it from a related page. Not specifying a URL will mean all referrers can see the popup.
15. A particularly useful setting is UTM values. Only visitors who have arrived from a campaign with certain UTM values attached, or have come from a page which has specific UTM values in the URL, can see the popup.
16. If you are wanting to include your own targeting using Javascript, then you are able to add that in here.
Filtering which visitors can see your popup is highly recommended. It has many benefits, including preventing certain customers from seeing updates which may not be meant for them, allowing certain visitors to see the popup only if they've come from a certain campaign, and more.
Once you have created your popup following the instructions above, we recommend going back through and checking everything is correct.
- Make sure your design is what you have planned and fits your company branding
- Check for grammatical errors
- Ensure the Target URL is as desired
- Use the preview screen to test the animations and visuals on different devices
- Check the settings to make sure the popup has a specified time period to be active in.
- Make sure your Target Page is correct
When everything has been checked you can enable your popup.
To do this, select the disabled button as shown above. This will switch it's state to 'Enabled'.
